What inspired you to venture into your current industry/profession, and what drives your passion for it?
My design career began at the age of 27 when I pursued Footwear Design at RMIT. The hands-on design components really captivated me and drove my interest toward the technical side of design. A year later, I enrolled into a graphic design course and fell in love with the creative freedom and possibilities of design. Shortly after graduation, Covid hit. This is when I noticed a rising trend in people launching online businesses while confined to their homes. Determined to find work, I reached out to friends and small businesses, enquiring if they had any design opportunities available. Many responded with limited openings of a few hours per week, unable to provide more substantial hours. Seeing an untapped market, I embraced these opportunities and swiftly developed service packages tailored to 3, 5 and 10 hour weekly design/creative packages. Word quickly spread, and people were thrilled by the flexibility and the chance to have their own project manager and designer supporting their businesses. Since the launch of Toolakea, I'm so proud of our service and ramble about its impact to anyone who will listen. Witnessing the positive impact we have on our clients' businesses and their personal growth is so incredibly rewarding.
Could you share a remarkable achievement or milestone in your career or personal life that you're particularly proud of? How did you overcome challenges to accomplish it?
Starting Toolakea has been my biggest achievement, not just because of the beautiful creative community that has grown and flourished organically, but because I had to overcome a lot of internal obstacles such as the fear of speaking up, showcasing my work, fear of failure, all of those annoying but natural things we all face as business owners. It was a personal situation in my life that happened that really made me think, what have I got to lose?
In what ways do you believe your star sign influences your approach to life and business? Are there any specific traits or characteristics associated with your sign/natal chart that you identify with?
Absolutely, I love being a fishy Pisces girl aka loves to daydream and drift into the abis. 90% of the time I'm dreaming about where I want to take my business, dream clients I want to reach out to and projects we're working on. The other 10%, I'm either dreaming about my tiny dog Emmylou or food. As for Aries Moon and Gemini Rising, it explains why I am always full of energy, open-minded, adaptable and often quite impulsive (sometimes a little too much), however, they're all traits that serve me well as the solo owner of a growing creative agency!
What strategies or practices do you rely on to maintain a healthy work-life balance? How do you prioritise self-care and personal well-being amidst your professional endeavours?
Self care definitely isn't an area I struggle in! I love spending time alone and having time to recharge. I can't survive running a business on my own without tapping out, finding the closest sauna or taking myself out for dinner each week. Working from a computer all day becomes very fatiguing, so I avoid rostering myself or my team on for anything more than 6 hours. I also set healthy boundaries for both our team and clients, asking them not to reach out before 8:30 am or after 4 pm, so we all have time to unwind. The balance is essential for a happy work environment.
Can you offer any advice or words of wisdom to aspiring individuals in your industry who look up to you as a role model? What key lessons or experiences have shaped your journey and contributed to your success?
Identify your niche, stay true to your authentic self, and establish connections with people you admire. Stay open-minded and adaptable because your own evolution will parallel your passions and interests. Stand firm in your beliefs and vision, resisting any attempts to sway you, yet remain receptive to valuable guidance and advice because that's where the real value lies.
